If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears, does it make a sound? Governments, businesses, and other groups have published a treasure trove of datasets over the years. But for these datasets to be truly valuable and impactful, people actually need to hear about them, and understand what they mean.
In this spirit, LiveStories is excited to introduce a new series of stories called Five Facts. These articles take a close look at the data behind some of the most important issues facing Americans today. We boil down the data to five insights, and we include interactive charts and maps so readers can explore the data themselves.
Our first story takes a look at state and local taxes: where the money comes from, and where it goes, for all fifty states. We took the latest tax and spending from the U.S. Census and examined the numbers on a per capita basis.
If you’re one of the millions of Americans filing state income tax returns—or if you’re lucky enough to live in a state without them, and you’re curious about where your sales tax money goes—check out our Five Facts story. You might be surprised at some of the insights we've found. Or explore the data yourself, follow the money, and come up with your own insights.
Other Five Facts stories examine the data on refugees and changing state populations. You can check them out here.
